Title
Ways into Creative Writing for Beginners
Level
Beginners
Who is this course for?
This course is for aspiring writers with little or no experience of writing creatively, and also for those who have tried to write in the past but want to improve their skills and practise writing in different contexts. It is aimed at those who want to learn how to write for personal development, pleasure or mental and intellectual satisfaction, or for the benefit of their mental health, rather than for commercial purposes. It will provide you with a safe space to produce regular written work, and will challenge you to believe in yourself and what you have to say, and to express and communicate things which, whilst they may be personal, will have universal value and will resonate with others.
What will I learn on this course?
You will learn to tune into your own imaginative potential, using words as the tools to translate what is in your imagination for yourself and others to enjoy and appreciate. You will also learn how to use words more effectively to enhance and add nuance to the meanings you want to create. You will learn how to plan and structure writing in a meaningful way, and how to create and develop meaningful characters, settings, and dialogue. You will develop critical reading skills by analysing how other writers create effects through the written word and begin to develop your own personal style. Throughout the course, you will be challenged to tap into your inner self, and tune into Nature and the world around you to develop your understanding and compassion to enhance the quality of your writing.
Course entry requirements
Students need to be native or reasonably proficient speakers of English as this course will not teach you English language but rather enhance how you use language to communicate in imaginative ways.
Progression opportunities
You can progress onto longer Creative Writing courses at CALAT or elsewhere and move into Intermediate and Advanced courses. You can use the confidence and practice you gain to start to begin a writing career.
