An Introduction to Spanish

Level:

Complete beginners.

Prior knowledge:

Little or no knowledge of Spanish. However, students should have a good standard of spoken and written English and be able to work independently.




What will I learn?

To listen to and identify information from short extracts in the target language, to make simple requests and provide basic information and take part in a short conversation. To read short extracts and dialogues and to write single words and simple phrases.

Subject contents/Topics to be covered:

Greetings
Introductions
The Alphabet
Number from 1-100
Giving basic personal details
Expressing simple needs and wants, including ordering drinks and snacks in a cafe.
An insight into Spanish food and culture.

Teaching/learning methods:

Teacher presentation, followed by students practising together in small groups, pairs or as a whole class.
Exercises.
Watching and listening to audio/on-line presentations.

What examinations will I be able to take?

There is no formal examination at the end of the course, however, you will be expected to complete a few pieces of work to demonstrate what you have learnt during the course.

Assessment pattern:

Continuous assessment by the Tutor, based on work done in class and at home. You will complete a small portfolio of work to evidence your learning.

Additional costs to students:

Text book: To be advised by the Tutor during the first class. Students are advised not to buy any text books before the course starts.

What extra work will I need to do outside the classroom?

Approximately one hour per week going over work done in class, doing simple exercises and learning vocabulary.

Equipment/information needed to participate in class:

This course will be delivered in the classroom at Croydon Clocktower.

Please bring a pen, pencil, a small note book and a folder to put your work in.

Details of your e-mail address and mobile telephone number are important so you may be notified of course changes or work set if you are absent from class or if the Tutor cannot teach for any reason. As these details are often sent by text message, your mobile number is also very important.

Progression opportunities:

Completion of this course will enable students to join an accredited Entry 3 Speaking & listening Spanish course next academic year.
