Able to use a sewing machine with confidence and has acquired some knowledge of clothes making.
What Will I learn on this course?
On this course you will learn to improve the sewing, measuring and adjustment skills you need to become a dressmaker. By the end of the course, you'll be able to make beautiful garments, and have improved your knowledge of fabrics & Textiles.
You will also learn a range of stitching techniques and how to add essential fashion items to a variety of garments.
By the end of the course depending on your level of experience you should be able
to:
1. Take accurate measurements.
2. Follow paper commercial pattern instructions.
3. Choose appropriate fabrics and haberdashery.
4. Use up to date methods of garment construction such as, stitch seams, darts, panels, waistbands, facings and setting in sleeves.
5. Evaluate your work and recognise areas for improvement.
Subject Contents/Topics to be covered
During the course depending on your project you will learn about:
1. Garment construction & fitting.
2. Reading and understanding a commercial pattern
3. Laying, cutting and marking pattern and fabric.
4. Hemming and finishing methods.
5. Fastenings including buttons and machine buttonholes and zips.
6. Pressing techniques.
7. Machine use and care.
8. Fabric identification & care.
Teaching/Learning Methods
Classroom demonstration, one-one. Small group discussion and email support.
What Examinations Will I be Able to Take?
No Exams.
Assessment Pattern
Your progress and achievement will be recognised and recorded in writing throughout.
Your tutor will make initial assessments of your abilities in order to help plan your work with you and set you some learning objectives.
You will learn to evaluate your work and recognise areas for improvement with help from your tutor.
At the end of the course you and your tutor will discuss and record what you have achieved and what you still need or want to learn.
Additional Costs to learners
Learners are expected to provide their own materials and tools where appropriate for classes. Please do not buy any expensive equipment in advance of the course apart from any essential equipment required for the first lesson which is detailed below. Tutors will give advice on the course about how and where equipment can be purchased. Costs of equipment will vary depending on individual projects undertaken.
Equipment needed will cost £10 - £20.
What Extra Work Do I Need to Do Outside the Classroom?
To continue with individual projects.
Equipment Materials to be brought to the First Meeting:
Project ideas, to be discussed with the tutor, notebook and pen and folder.
