Prior knowledge:

A basic knowledge of Portuguese – you should already be able to meet and greet another Portuguese speaker and order a simple drink and snack in a café and book simple hotel accommodation. Students should also have a good standard of spoken and written English and be able to work independently.

What will I learn?

To take part in simple conversations about personal, social and work related matters. To read a simple text and to listen to statements and conversations and understand details. To produce a written text using language structures learned.

Subject contents/Topics to be covered:

Introducing and describing people in detail
Describing my daily routine
Talking about food and drink
Talking about holidays and future plans.

Teaching/learning methods:

Teacher presentation, followed by students practising together in small groups, pairs or as a whole class.
Exercises.
Watching and listening to audio/on-line presentations.

What examinations will I be able to take?

There will be no formal examinations this term.

Assessment pattern:

Continuous assessment based on work done in class and at home by the Tutor to update you on your progress

Additional costs to students:

Text book: To be advised by the Tutor during the first class. Students are advised not to buy any text books before the course starts.

What extra work will I need to do outside the classroom?

Approximately one hour per week going over work done in class, doing simple exercises and learning vocabulary.

Equipment/information needed to participate in class:

To participate online, you will need to have a webcam and a microphone in order to participate fully. You will also need a current e-mail address so that your Tutor can send you the invitation to join his/her online classroom. You will need to ensure you supply your e-mail address when you enrol so that you are able to participate from the start.
Details of your e-mail address and mobile telephone number are very important as we may need to call/e-mail you regarding course changes or work set if you are absent from class or if the Tutor cannot teach for any reason and you do not need to attend the class that particular day.

Progression opportunities:

Completion of this course will enable students to join a continuation Portuguese course next term, subject to satisfactory enrolment numbers.
