Beginners Guide to using WordPress

Prior Knowledge

Some previous experience of using a computer is essential.

What Will I learn?

Whether you already have a page and want to manage it properly or are starting completely from scratch, this is the course for you. We’ll create a webpage in the classroom from the beginning and be able to customise it to suit your needs, as well as looking at lots of options for further developing your page after the workshop.

Subject Contents/Topics to be covered

You will learn how to:
•Apply an attractive design using easy templates
•Set up and run a great webpage of your own
•Add text content and images
•We’ll also look at how you can get your own domain name

Teaching/Learning Methods

The tutor will offer carefully designed tasks where you will be able to practise using your WordPress and set up your webpage. The tutor will also be able to assess your progress through visual results and your understanding of the course material and will offer feedback on your webpage to help you improve. By the end of the workshop you should have made significant progress improving or setting up a webpage.

What Examinations Will I be Able to Take?

Assessment Pattern

Classroom tasks will be set during lesson time and for further study at home. Assessment will be based on completion for these tasks and your ability to demonstrate knowledge through discussion and observations.

Additional Costs to Students

You may wish to purchase a domain name and upgrade your WordPress to allow you to use plugins and other features not included in the free version. Prices typically range from between £36.00-£240.00 per annum. However, upgrading is not essential to completing the course.

What Extra Work Do I Need to Do Outside the Classroom?

We recommend that you continue developing your webpage after class in order to keep the content updated and progress your learning.

Equipment Materials to be brought to the First Meeting

A laptop will be supplied for you at our centre. It is recommended that you bring any content (text & images) you’d like to put onto a webpage with you on a USB stick. A pen and notepaper is recommended to help you make notes.
