An Introduction to British Sign Language

Level:

Beginners

Prior knowledge:

None required.

This course is suitable for complete beginners who are looking to take the first steps in learning Sign Language. Students must have a good standard of spoken English and be able to work independently. Students must also have sufficient sight, manual dexterity and facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course students will be able to:

Finger spell

Understand the skills required to produce and receive BSL.

Understand and use a limited range of simple words and very basic sentences in BSL.

Subject contents/Topics to be covered:

The BSL alphabet
Finger Spelling / Numbering
Greetings
Numbers

Teaching/learning methods:

You will be taught using the smart board, digital demonstration, discussion, question and answer, group work, pair work role play, video, and internet.

What examinations will I be able to take?

There will be no formal examinations this term.

Assessment pattern:

The tutor will monitor your progression on the course and update you on your achievement.

Additional costs to students:

Students are advised not to buy any text books/DVD before the course starts. The tutor may recommend books/material which may be useful for your studies during the course.

What extra work will I need to do outside the classroom?

You should expect to do roughly an hour of work each week.
Watch DVDs or signed television programmes to improve your signing receptivity.

Equipment/materials to be brought to the first lesson:

Paper, pen and a folder to put your work in. Details of your e-mail address and mobile telephone number so you may be notified of course changes or work set if you are absent from class or if the Tutor cannot teach for any reason.
