Who is it suitable for?

Learners that are working or volunteering in a support role in schools and colleges.

What will I learn?

An understanding for the knowledge and skills when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. How to support children and young people's learning and positive behaviour, effective communication and professional relations in school and college environments.

How will the course be taught?

Lively, interactive learning through 1-1 tutorials, discussion, group work and class-based practice. This course helps you understand teachers' and pupils' needs and gives you more information and greater insight into working in a school setting.

Location: CALAT Thornton Heath, Zion Road, Croydon CR7 8RG

Learners must complete a work placement one day per week as part of their course. You may be already employed or volunteering as a Teaching Assistant; however, the placement must be within the London Borough of Croydon, as our assessors cannot carry out observations of work practice outside of Croydon.

If you are currently working or volunteering in a school where you have a current DBS, you won’t need to reapply for one. However, If you are not currently working in a school setting, or are unemployed, you will need to apply through CALAT for a DBS for this course.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

After you complete this course, you can progress to Level 3 - Teaching Assistant

Attendance requirements

You will need to attend weekly and punctually and attend for the duration of the class

How to apply for this course

You are invited to attend an information and assessment session at our Thornton Heath centre. You must be 19 years of age or above as of 31.8.24 and live in the borough of Croydon to enrol on this course.

The course may be free depending on your current employment status or income. When you attend, you will need to bring with you, original official Photo ID. Please also bring proof of income (your last 3 months' wage slips) or if unemployed, proof of any benefits you are currently in receipt of.

At the session you will complete a short English assessment and have a discussion with the course tutor.

Unfortunately, we cannot see anyone who has not booked an appointment in advance. We are unable to admit children at these sessions.

If successful, you will be offered a place on the course, and receive an offer letter.
