Dressmaking - Carry on Sewing Mixed Ability

All levels

Prior Knowledge

Beginner Level: No previous sewing experience required.
Intermediate Level: Learners should be able to use a sewing machine with confidence and have some basic knowledge of clothes making.

What Will I learn?

By the end of the course depending on your level of experience you should be able to:
•Introduction to the sewing machine and pressing equipment
•Identify suitable fabrics for bag and lining
•Create your own basic bag pattern
•Identify different seam methods
•Lining and seating a bag
•Apply a pocket
•How to make straps
•Apply a zip fastening

What will I learn?

Beginners will learn how to:
Take accurate body measurements.
Record and use body measurements.
Follow simple patterns and written instructions.
Lay pattern pieces correctly onto fabric.
Cut garment pieces safely and accurately.
Prepare and use a sewing machine.
Sew and assemble a simple garment.

More advanced learners can explore:
Using more advanced patterns.
Adapting and modifying patterns.
Developing confidence with more complex garment construction.

Teaching/Learning Methods:

This course will be tutor-led with step-by-step demonstrations.
Learners will also:
Be shown example samples.
Receive informative handouts and worksheets.
Receive individual guidance appropriate to their level.
Be advised by the tutor on essential items to bring for projects.

Assessment Pattern

Your progress and achievement will be recognised throughout the duration of the course.
You will:
Evaluate your understanding and identify areas for improvement with tutor support.
Receive constructive feedback from your tutor.
Develop confidence in practical sewing and dressmaking skills.
Transfer the skills gained to other sewing and garment construction projects.

At the end of the course, you and your tutor will discuss and record what you have achieved and identify any further learning needs.

Sample fabric.
Matching thread.
Basic sewing kit (fabric scissors, ruler, tape measure, pins)

Equipment and Materials to Bring to the First Meeting

Please do not bring any sewing patterns to the first meeting unless your tutor informs you otherwise.
Pen and paper for making notes during class.
An A4 file or folder to keep samples and worksheets.
