Spanish Beginners Entry Level - Part 1

SEG Awards ABC Entry 3 Award in Speaking & Listening in Spanish (Skills and Education Group is the Awarding Body)

Level:

Complete beginners. This course is suitable for complete beginners or for those who know only a few words of Spanish.

Prior knowledge:

No prior knowledge of the language is necessary. Learners must have a good standard of both spoken and written English.


What will I learn?

The emphasis throughout our courses is on effective communication and on building a firm foundation in the four key skills of SPEAKING, LISTENING, READING & WRITING. The specific emphasis during this course is on Speaking & Listening

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Listen to and identify information from short extracts in the target language.
- Make simple requests and provide basic information, taking part in a short conversation of at least 2 or 3 exchanges.
- Read short texts and dialogues.
- Write short sentences correctly.

Subject contents/Topics to be covered:


Greet someone correctly, respond to greetings, take your leave at any time of the day

Introduce yourself and your family simply

Say where you live and where you are from

Give and ask for basic personal details, and details about employment

Order a drink and snack in a café

Order a meal in a restaurant, express likes and dislikes, ask for and pay the bill

Spell names

Apologise and interrupt

Using numbers 1-100

Ask about the availability of hotel accommodation

Tell the time, recognise and refer to days of the week, months of the year and seasons

Grammar:
Introduction to the use of articles/nouns
Formal/informal modes of address
Basic uses of SER/ESTAR (to be)
Basic use of negatives
Basic use of the present tense singular (including some irregular verbs)
Prepositions of time
Introduction of verb GUSTAR (to like) and DOLER (to hurt)
Prepositions of place

Teaching/learning methods:

Conversation, reading, listening, role play, pair and group work, audio, video, occasional games, authentic materials.

What examinations will I be able to take?

You will work towards the SEG Awards ABC Entry 3 Award in SPEAKING & LISTENING in Spanish. (Skills and Education Group is the Awarding Body). This accreditation is based on work done in class or at home to build up a small portfolio there are no examinations. The SEG Awards registration fee has been included in the course fee.

In this Unit the assessment focus of the portfolio will be on SPEAKING and LISTENING but the other skills of Reading & Writing will be developed as well during the course.

CALAT Examination and Assessment Appeals Procedure:
Learners who wish to appeal against the result of an examination or assessment should within 20 days of being notified, contact their course tutor or the relevant Centre Examinations Officer for advice on the correct appeals procedures.

Assessment pattern:

Continuous assessment based on work done in class and at home to build up a small portfolio which will then be internally and externally verified.

Additional costs to students:

Text book: To be advised by the Tutor during the first class. Students are advised not to buy any text books before the course starts.


What extra work will I need to do outside the classroom?

Approximately one hour per week going over work done in class, doing exercises and learning vocabulary.

Course code CTL133-23 will take place in the classroom at Croydon Clocktower.

Course code DEL135-23 will take place online via Zoom.

Course code TZL137-23 will be delivered in the classroom at Strand House, Thornton Heath.

To join the online class, you will need to have a webcam and a microphone in order to participate fully. You will also need a current e-mail address so that your Tutor can send you the invitation to join his/her online classroom. You will need to ensure you supply your e-mail address when you enrol so that you are able to participate from the start.

Please bring paper, pens and a folder to put your work in for the classroom based courses.

For all courses - Details of your e-mail address and mobile telephone number are important so you may be notified of course changes or work set if you are absent from class or if the Tutor cannot teach for any reason. As these details are often sent by text message, your mobile number is also very important.

Progression opportunities:

Completion of this course will enable students to join a continuation Spanish course next term, subject to satisfactory enrolments.
