Clothesmaking for Beginners - Make a Simple Skirt
No prior sewing knowledge needed, just a desire to sew. Learners will require a good understanding of spoken and written English.
What will I learn?
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
Thread and use the basic functions of the sewing machine
Recognise and practise health and safety within the sewing room
Construct a variety of sewing samples relating to a simple skirt
Pressing and finishing techniques
Lay, cut and construct a simple skirt
Subject content/topics to be covered
Students will learn how to thread and use the basic functions of the sewing machine. Learners will be taught how to construct a selection of sewing samples relating to making a simple skirt, this will include seams, hems, darts and waist finishes. Students will then learn how to make a simple skirt using sewing techniques appropriate to fabric and style. Students will be given a choice of two designs.
Teaching learning methods
Demonstrations of techniques in small and large groups. One to one support. Handouts. A platform of teaching techniques, resources, links and suppliers
What Examinations will I be able to take?
Your progress and achievements will be recognised and recorded in writing throughout. Your tutor will make initial assessments of your abilities in order to help plan your work with you. You will learn to evaluate your work and recognise areas for improvement with help from your tutor. At the end of the course, you and your tutor will discuss and record what you have achieved and your progression route. Students will be working through set units which need to be achieved throughout the term.

Equipment needed for the first lesson
Paper and a pen for note taking. Fabric scissors.
A list of sewing equipment will be discussed in the first lesson.
Punctuality and full attendance are the requirements of this course.
