Prior Knowledge

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills required to follow verbal and written instruction. The tutor will explain any specialist terms used. Suitable for experienced learners and complete beginners.

What Will I learn?

You will increase your confidence in painting and drawing, develop observational skills and learn a range of painting and drawing techniques, within a supportive and learning studio environment.

Subject Contents/Topics to be covered:

1. Understand and explore the basic elements in art e.g. composition, form, tone, texture and colour

2. Develop observational skills, work with confidence and be aware of Health and Safety

3. Learn a range of drawing techniques, including measuring, line, proportion, perspective, tonal shading, erasing etc in pencil and charcoal.

4. Paint using a variety of techniques and media, e.g. wet on wet, dry brush, wash, etc. with watercolour or acrylic.

5. Explore a variety of subject matter and develop an understanding of the basic elements in art e.g. colour, tone, texture etc. in relations to other artists chosen each term

Teaching/Learning Methods:

The class will be taught through a combination of tutor demonstrations, individual studio practice, pair/group work, group discussion, question and answer, observation and tutor feedback

Assessment Pattern:

Your progress and achievement will be recognised throughout the duration of the course.

You will learn to evaluate your understanding and recognise areas for improvement with help from your tutor.

At the end of the course you and your tutor will discuss and record what you have achieved and what you still need or want to learn.

Additional Costs to Students:

Various art materials that will be advised on during the course.

What Extra Work Do I Need to Do Outside the Classroom?

Maintain a sketch book and continue painting.

Equipment Materials to be brought to the First Meeting:

Pen and paper for making notes. Personal learning file

Other Notes:

You will be asked to complete necessary online paperwork in order that CALAT can claim government funding to subsidise the cost of the course.

Further CALAT Art History courses which take a chronological approach to the subject.
