Make a simple Top



Prior Knowledge

No prior sewing knowledge needed, just a desire to sew. Learners will require a good understanding of spoken and written English.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

• Thread and use the basic functions of the sewing machine
• Recognise and practise health and safety within the sewing room
• Construct a variety of sewing samples relating to a simple top
• Pressing and finishing techniques
• Lay, cut and construct a simple top

Subjects/Topics to be covered

Students will learn how to thread and use the basic functions of the sewing machine. Learners will be taught how to construct a selection of sewing samples relating to making a simple top, this will include seams, hems, neck finishes darts and sleeves. Students will then learn how to make a simple top using sewing techniques appropriate to fabric and style. Students will be given a choice of two designs

Teaching/Learning Methods

Demonstrations of techniques in small and large groups. One to one support. Handouts. A platform of teaching techniques, resources, links and suppliers

What examination can I take?

No exams

Assessment Pattern

Your progress and achievements will be recognised and recorded in writing throughout. Your tutor will make initial assessments of your abilities in order to help plan your work with you. You will learn to evaluate your work and recognise areas for improvement with help from your tutor. At the end of the course, you and your tutor will discuss and record what you have achieved and your progression route. Students will be working through set units which need to be achieved throughout the term

What work do I need to do outside of the Classroom?

To progress with work

Equipment/materials to be brought to the first meeting

Paper and a pen for note taking. Fabric scissors.
A list of sewing equipment will be discussed in the first lesson
