Drawing & Painting - Intermediate and Advanced group

Level:

Intermediate and advanced.

Prior Knowledge:

Have already completed a beginners art course at CALAT or any adult college

What will I l learn?

•This course is taught thematically and each term a different artist, art movement and/or a theme is chosen
where learners are able to experiment inspired by nature, interiors, cities, still life or portraiture.
•A wide range of artists throughout all periods of art history and art work is used in these practical sessions
chosen from Great Britain and artist from all over the world.
•Learners develop confidence and advance skills in drawing and painting using a variety of different
materials and techniques e.g. watercolour or acrylic, inks, pastel, lead or graphite, charcoal, collage,
mixed media etc.
•Learners are shown how to practise health and safety in a studio environment.
•Using water base media learners experiment a wide variety of techniques and media e.g. wet on wet, dry
brush, wash, glazing, impasto, under drawings, lifting off etc. with watercolour or acrylic.
•With plenty of demonstrations from an experienced artist tutor, learners explore variety of subject matter
and develop understanding of the basic elements in art e.g. composition, colour, tone, line, pattern,
texture etc.
•Each session ends with a plenary session and learners are encouraged do discus their own and peer’s
work.
•Visits to galleries & museums and use the internet for research is encouraged at every opportunity.

Assessment pattern:

plenary at the end of each session and celebration of art work either at the centre or online using secret Facebook page for this group

All art materials provide by the learner - a full list will be given at the first session

What extra work do I need to do outside the classroom?

Research online, visit art galleries or museums if possible and practise

Equipment/Materials to be brought to the first meeting:

A3 hardback (portrait shape) good quality cartridge sketch book and a set of lead or graphite pencils, mars rubber and drawing pens. All learners are required to have The Art Book and/or The 20th Century Art Book or/and Art USA all published by Phaidon and a hardback A5 or A4 sketchbook to make notes in.
