French Level 2 - Lower Advanced level term 3 (Tuesday class)

Level:

Year 4/5 - Lower Advanced Level.

If you are new to CALAT, please contact us at languages1@croydon.gov.uk before enrolling so that we can check your level and make sure this is the right course for you.

Prior knowledge:

This course follows on from the previous course (Level 2 Part 2 Reading & Writing)and assumes you have studied French for 4/5 years.

You should already be able to hold a reasonable conversation with a degree of confidence with a native speaker, employing the present, past and future tenses.


What will I learn?

This Lower Advanced level course is the third term of an academic year of study. You will have already developed your skills in the following aspects and will continue this term to increase your ability to:

Discuss and give opinions on topics of general interest with greater confidence
Communicate with increased fluency and accuracy using past, present and future tenses
Give personal information
Express personal preferences
Demonstrate a knowledge of aspects of life in the countries where the language is spoken
Provide a detailed description of places (towns and countries)
Read newspaper and magazine articles and items on the internet with greater confidence and use them as a basis for discussion and written activities
Describe the weather in detailed terms.

Subject contents/Topics to be covered over the three terms of the academic year:

Term 3 is a term of consolidation. During this term you will:

Practise the different uses of the passé composé tense
Practise the different uses of the imperfect tense
Practise the different uses of the future tense (or other expressions to make plans for the future)
Practise the different uses of the conditional tense (what one would do if a certain thing happened)
Practise the different uses of infinitive of verbs and other routine forms as appropriate
Practise the different uses of imperative commands (positive and negative)
Practise the different uses of relative pronouns
Practise the different uses of negative structures
Introduction to present subjunctive in a limited context
Practise the different uses of link words to make longer sentences
Understand how the differences and similarities between the students' own and other people's cultural conventions may affect communication

Teaching/learning methods:

Conversation, reading, listening, role play, pair and group work, audio, video, occasional games, authentic materials.

What examinations will I be able to take?

There will be no formal examinations this term.

Assessment pattern:

Continuous assessment by the Tutor to update you on your progress.

Additional costs to students:

Text book: To be advised by the Tutor during the first class. Students are advised not to buy any text books before the course starts.

What extra work will I need to do outside the classroom?

One or two hours per week going over work done in class, revising the different tenses, doing exercises and learning vocabulary.

Equipment/information needed to participate in class:

This course will take place in the classroom at Croydon Clocktower.

Pen, paper and a folder to put your work in.

Details of your e-mail address and mobile telephone number are very important as we may need to call/e-mail you regarding course changes or work set if you are absent from class or if the Tutor cannot teach for any reason and you do not need to attend the class that particular day.

Progression opportunities:

Completion of this course will enable students to join a follow on French course next academic year with CALAT, subject to satisfactory enrolment numbers.
