NCFE CACHE - Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools
What will I learn?
The course aims to help you:
- understand more about working in schools, alongside a school teacher
- support children’s learning in a school environment
- learn how to work as part of a team in a school setting
- learn how to communicate effectively with children
- understand Equality, diversity, and inclusion
- find out about and prepare for the demands of the level 2 teaching assistant course
Subject contents / topics to be covered
Through lively, interactive learning, discussion and group work as well as class-based practice, you will explore the following areas:
- understand schools as organisations
- understand how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well
- understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults
Assessment Method
Portfolio of evidence to include:
- Assignments, reports, presentations
- Personal action plan for progression
- Personal Learning Plan (PLP)
Progression opportunities
On successful completion of this Level 1 Award, you can progress to:-
- Level 2 Teaching Assistant
- Level 2 Diploma in Early Years
Fees
If you are receiving qualifying benefits you may not have to pay the course fee. When you attend your information session, we will ask you to bring evidence of any benefits you currently receive and / or proof of income covering the last 3 months.

Time: 09:30-15:00
Joining instructions
You are invited to attend an information and assessment session at our Thornton Heath centre, unless stated otherwise below.
You must be 19 years of age or above as of 31.8.24 and live in the borough of Croydon to enrol on this course. The course may be free depending on your current employment status or income.
When you attend, you will need to bring with you, original official Photo ID. Please also bring proof of income (your last 3 months' wage slips, or if unemployed, proof of any benefits you are currently in receipt of). At the session you will complete a short English assessment and have a discussion with the course tutor.

Unfortunately, we cannot see anyone who has not booked an appointment in advance. We are unable to admit children at these sessions.
If successful, you will be offered a place on the course, and receive an offer letter.
