Course Details

Qualification level and title

Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care

Prior knowledge

Minimum of 3 months experience of working or volunteering in the adult health and social care setting and you should be working approximately 10 hours per week.

Applicants for this course will complete a literacy and numeracy assessment, a skills scan, and have an individual interview with the programme manager /Curriculum Coordinator.
This is a demanding course therefore all applicants will need to be aware that the course will require a real commitment to further reading and research to complete the assignments.
All learners are responsible for the uploading of work for their E - portfolios and for referencing their work as advised by the course teacher

What will I learn?

This course is aimed at individuals who are currently working within the adult health and social care sector. You will develop and extend your practice and learn about the legislation that underpins the health and social care sector.

The diploma consists of 9 mandatory units. You will then complete optional units that will be decided in discussion with the assessor to complete the remaining credits which include:

* Person centred care
* Duty of Care
* Safeguarding
* Equality and Inclusion
* Personal Development
* Personal care
* Food safety
* Mobility

Extra work outside the classroom:

You must be prepared to complete at least 6 hours of private study, research, and additional reading per week. You will meet with an assessor to plan workplace observations
You must be able to meet all deadlines for submission of assignments and meet your teacher or assessor on planned dates for observation planning and review of your portfolio of evidence. Assignments will need to be submitted in the format as advised by your course teacher.
The course assessor may email relevant and useful reading to be completed to extend and consolidate understanding of topics covered in class.


Subject contents / topics to be covered

The diploma consists of 9 mandatory units. You will then complete optional units that will be decided in discussion with the assessor to complete the remaining credits which include:

* Personal Development

Teaching / learning methods

Groupwork, discussion, role-plays, tutor presentations, project work. All learners are allocated an assessor who will observe learners’ work place performance and provide support and guidance to enable the learner to complete a portfolio of evidence.

What extra work do I need to do outside the classroom?

You will meet with an assessor to plan workplace observations and collate a portfolio. Homework and projects which will involve further research. There will be at least 5 hours per week research and study required to complete the qualification.

What examinations will I be able to take?

There are no examinations. You will submit a portfolio of evidence of which must meet the criteria for the qualification, demonstrating their competence in the workplace and their understanding of legislation and good practice.

Additional costs to learners

City & Guilds Registration & Certification fee for all learners.

Progression opportunities

This course offers an excellent progression route to City & Guilds Diploma Health & Social Care Level 3. The Level 3 Diploma is for experienced care staff, who have a supervisory / key worker role, or who have some level of decision making in their role. It is a nationally recognised professional qualification in care work.

Entry requirements

You need to seek permission from your Manager and Service User for your assessor to observe your practice in the workplace.

You will be asked to complete necessary paperwork in order that CALAT can claim government funding to subsidise the cost of the course.

Equipment required

A4 folder, dividers, pens and paper suitable for note taking (coloured pencils/felt tips may be required for completing some of the tasks).
